Vertical gardening is growing across the US as gardeners maximize fence lines, deck railings, and walls in small yards. The technique suits container-friendly vegetables, herbs, and ornamentals and is popular from apartment balconies to suburban backyard gardens. Why grow vertically?

Vertical gardening produces more plants per square foot of ground than any other method by using wall, fence, and airspace that would otherwise sit unused. A 6-foot fence line with a trellis system can grow 12–20 cucumber plants in the linear space that 3 ground-sprawling plants would occupy.

The yield-per-space advantage is real, but it’s not the only benefit. Vertical growing also:

  • Improves air circulation around foliage, which reduces fungal disease pressure by 20–40% in humid climates

  • Reduces slug and ground pest contact with low-growing crops
  • Creates privacy screens and visual structure in small yards

The four main types of vertical garden systems

Trellis systems

The simplest and most productive vertical option for most US gardens. A trellis is any structure — wire mesh, wooden panel, string, or netting — that provides vertical support for climbing plants.

Panel trellis: a 4x6 foot or 6x8 foot rigid wire or wooden grid leaned against a wall, attached to fence posts, or freestanding. Works for cucumbers, pole beans, peas, tomatoes, and vining flowers.

String trellis: twine or jute string stretched vertically between two horizontal wires or rails. Simpler and cheaper than panel trellis. Easier to set up at the start of a season and remove at the end.

Wire fencing: standard concrete reinforcement wire or garden fencing stretched between fence posts. Durable, economical, and works for heavy vegetables. A 5-foot section of 4x4 wire fencing between two posts costs $8–$15 and lasts 10+ years.

Pocket planters and living walls

Pocket planters use felt, fabric, or plastic pockets attached to a backing panel and mounted to a wall or fence. Each pocket holds a single plant in a small volume of growing mix — typically 1–3 quarts.

Best uses: herbs (parsley, basil, thyme, chives), small greens (lettuce, spinach, arugula), edible flowers (nasturtiums, violas), and strawberries.

Limitations: the small root volume means watering frequency is high (daily in summer heat), and plants rarely produce the same yields as ground-level counterparts. Pocket planters are best viewed as a functional display system rather than a production system.

Weight: this is the specification most buyers underestimate. A 20-pocket panel with soil and plants saturated with water weighs 80–120 lbs. A wooden fence can support this weight if anchored into posts. A drywall interior wall cannot safely support this without hitting studs. Before mounting, use a stud finder and anchor all mounting points into structural members.

Pallet gardens

A wood shipping pallet repurposed as a vertical planting surface. Stand the pallet upright, staple landscape fabric to the back, bottom, and sides to create pockets between the slats, and fill with potting mix.

Cost: nearly free if you source pallets from hardware stores, nurseries, or garden centers (ask for heat-treated pallets marked HT — avoid chemically treated ones marked MB).

Best plants: herbs work best here because of their shallower root systems. Parsley, thyme, oregano, and chives all thrive in pallet pockets. Strawberries also work well.

Limitations: pallet gardens dry out extremely fast — daily watering is often necessary in summer. The wood deteriorates after 2–3 seasons outdoors. And pallets are heavier than they look — a pallet with wet soil can weigh 100+ lbs. Secure them to a fence or wall, not just leaned against it.

Tower gardens and vertical planters

Freestanding towers — from simple stacked pot designs to engineered aeroponic systems — let you grow in a column on a deck, patio, or balcony without any wall or fence attachment.

DIY stacked pot tower: 5–7 progressively smaller pots stacked inside each other, with plants growing from the gaps between each level. Costs $20–$40 in materials.

Strawberry towers: terracotta or plastic towers with planting holes along the sides — specifically designed for strawberries with a central watering tube. Effective for producing 1–2 quarts of strawberries per season per tower.

Aeroponic towers: commercial systems (Tower Garden brand is the most common in the US) that circulate nutrient-rich water through a hollow column to plant roots. These work, but require electricity, nutrients, and more management than soil-based systems. Cost: $500–$700 for a complete setup.

What to plant in a vertical garden

Shallow-rooted plants (best for pockets and pallets)

These plants have small enough root systems to thrive in the limited volume of vertical planting pockets:

  • Herbs: basil, parsley, thyme, chives, oregano, and mint (mint should be contained anyway — vertical pockets prevent its spread)
  • Lettuce: loose-leaf varieties like Oak Leaf or Black Seeded Simpson — pick outer leaves continuously and the plant keeps producing
  • Spinach: especially good in vertical systems facing east or north where partial shade prolongs the season
  • Strawberries: everbearing varieties work in towers; they don’t need as much root depth as many people assume

Ornamentals for vertical structure

Not all vertical garden use is edible. Flowering vines create privacy, reduce fence visibility, and attract pollinators in zones where vegetable production isn’t the goal:

  • Climbing roses — annual pruning required but long-lived and dramatic
  • Sweet pea — annual, grown from seed each spring in cooler US zones

Orientation and sun planning

The wall or fence orientation determines what you can grow:

South-facing: receives the most direct sun — 6–10 hours in summer. Best for fruiting vegetables (cucumbers, beans, tomatoes), heat-loving herbs (basil, rosemary), and sun-loving flowers.

West-facing: receives afternoon sun — intense and hot in summer. Works well for heat-tolerant crops in Zones 5–7. In Zones 8–10, afternoon western exposure can overheat and stress plants in summer; use shade cloth if needed.

East-facing: morning sun only — typically 4–6 hours. Ideal for lettuce, spinach, parsley, and cilantro, which prefer cooler conditions. Morning sun dries dew quickly, which reduces disease.

North-facing: least desirable for most edibles. Works for shade-tolerant herbs (mint, chervil), ferns, and some ornamental foliage plants. In Zones 7–9 where summer heat is intense, north-facing vertical walls can actually be advantageous for cool-season crops extended into summer.

Installation and structural requirements

Freestanding trellis systems

A trellis panel leaning against a wall or attached to fence posts needs minimal structural planning. Standard T-posts or 4x4 wood posts set 18–24 inches deep in the ground support trellises 6–8 feet tall without additional bracing.

Panel attachment: use galvanized wire or zip ties to attach wire mesh to posts. Stainless steel hardware lasts 10+ years; uncoated steel rusts within 2–3 seasons.

Spacing for production: set trellises 12–18 inches from walls to allow air circulation between the structure and climbing plants. Plants touching a wall or fence experience higher humidity and disease pressure.

Wall-mounted systems

Wall-mounted pocket planters and living wall frames require anchoring into structural members:

  • Wood fence or wood wall: screw directly into studs or posts using 3-inch screws with adequate weight-rated brackets
  • Concrete or brick: use masonry anchors rated for 50+ lbs per mounting point
  • Drywall only: not recommended for anything weighing over 20 lbs when wet; use drywall anchors rated for at least 50 lbs each and locate them 4 inches from each corner

Place mounting points no more than 24 inches apart vertically for panels over 4 feet tall.

Watering: the critical challenge

Vertical gardens dry out 30–50% faster than equivalent containers at ground level. The reasons:

  • Air circulates on all exposed surfaces of the growing mix
  • Heat from sun-exposed backing materials (metal, wood, concrete) raises temperature around roots
  • Small volumes of growing mix hold less water reserve than ground soil
  • Water drains downward through pockets and then off the bottom

Watering strategies:

Trellis systems: plants at ground level retain normal ground moisture. Water by the same schedule as other garden beds — once or twice per week in most climates, daily in peak summer heat over 90°F.

Pocket and panel systems: daily watering is typically necessary during June–August in USDA Zones 6–9. Twice-daily watering is sometimes needed in Zone 8–9 in July during heat waves.

Drip irrigation for pockets: thread 1/4-inch drip tubing across each row of pockets, placing an emitter near the top of each pocket. A timer running 10–15 minutes morning and evening eliminates the need for daily manual checking. This is the most reliable approach for living wall systems with 20+ pockets.

Self-watering pocket systems: some commercial pocket panels include a reservoir at the base that wicks water upward. These work but add 20–30% to purchase cost and need refilling every 2–3 days in summer.

Soil selection for vertical systems

Standard potting mix works for trellis systems where plants are in-ground. For pocket and pallet systems, standard mix is too heavy and compacts under its own weight in small vertical pockets.

Use a lightweight growing mix for pocket systems:

  • Coir-based mix: coconut fiber base, 30% perlite — holds moisture without compaction, much lighter than peat
  • Peat-perlite blend: 50/50 peat and perlite — affordable and widely available
  • Avoid: garden soil, heavy compost-heavy mixes, or anything that forms a solid block when dry

Lightweight mix also reduces the weight load on wall anchors and makes the system easier to move at season’s end.

Seasonal setup and maintenance

Spring setup: for pocket and pallet systems, replace growing mix after each winter in Zones 5–7 — freezing and thawing breaks down the mix structure. In Zones 8–10, refresh by topping each pocket with fresh mix and fertilizer.

Summer maintenance:

  • Fertilize pocket systems every 2–3 weeks with liquid fertilizer (the small soil volume depletes quickly)
  • Prune plants that outgrow their pocket
  • Check for aphids and spider mites — vertical systems concentrate pest populations on compact foliage

Fall: in Zones 5–7, remove annual plants from pocket systems before frost, empty and dry the pockets, and store fabric systems indoors. Wire trellis panels can stay outdoors year-round.
