Why your choice of potting mix matters more than fertilizer

A container plant’s performance starts with the growing medium. The wrong potting soil drowns roots, invites fungal disease, and limits what plants can absorb—regardless of how much fertilizer you add.

Healthy potting mix does three things: it holds enough moisture to keep roots hydrated between waterings, it drains fast enough to allow oxygen into the root zone, and it provides a loose physical structure that roots can penetrate easily. No fertilizer compensates for a mix that fails on any of these three points.

Peat moss: the most common base ingredient in US potting mixes. Holds water well, lightweight, slightly acidic (pH 3.5–4.5). Sustainable concern: peat bogs take centuries to form. Some manufacturers have shifted partially to coir.

Coir (coconut fiber): a byproduct of coconut processing, increasingly used as a peat alternative. Holds water similarly to peat but has a more neutral pH (5.5–6.5). Breaks down faster than peat.

Perlite: volcanic glass expanded by heat into lightweight white pellets. Improves drainage and aeration. Mixes with 15–25% perlite drain fast enough for most vegetables and herbs.

Vermiculite: expanded mica mineral that holds moisture and some nutrients. Used in mixes for seedlings and moisture-loving plants. Less drainage than perlite.

Types of potting mix: which to use for what

General-purpose potting mix

A peat or coir-based mix with perlite added for drainage. The right choice for:

  • Vegetables in containers (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, herbs)
  • Annual flowers in pots
  • Most houseplants except orchids, succulents, and bromeliads
  • Seed starting when diluted 50/50 with vermiculite

Look for: visible white perlite pieces, a slightly chunky texture, and a pH listed on the bag at 5.5–6.5.

Avoid: bags that feel very dense or compact when squeezed, mixes with no perlite visible, mixes that list “topsoil” or “field soil” as an ingredient for container use.

Cactus and succulent mix

A fast-draining blend with 50%+ mineral content (perlite, sand, grit). Succulents and cacti need their roots to dry out fully between waterings. A standard peat mix stays too wet and causes root rot within weeks.

Seed starting mix

  • You’re reusing old potting mix and the texture is dense and clumpy

Do not add extra perlite when:

  • Using soil for moisture-loving ferns or tropicals that need consistent moisture
  • Starting seeds—fine perlite can create air pockets around tiny seedlings
  • You’re growing in a hot, dry climate where moisture retention is already a challenge

Improving drainage in existing containers

If plants in your current mix sit in wet soil for days after watering, the drainage structure has collapsed. Options:

  1. Add a 2-inch layer of coarse perlite on top of the existing mix and work it in as far as possible without disturbing roots.
  2. Mix 1 cup of perlite per gallon of fresh mix when refreshing containers.
  3. Repot into a mix with 20–25% perlite content.

  • Add 1 cup perlite per gallon if perlite content looks low

Container soil and watering: how the mix affects frequency

The potting mix you choose directly determines how often you water. A high-perlite mix in a terracotta pot in Zone 9 summer may need watering every day. A peat-heavy mix in a plastic nursery pot in Zone 5 may hold moisture for 4–5 days.

General rule: stick your finger 1–2 inches into the mix. Water when it feels dry at that depth. Most container failures come from overwatering relative to the drainage capacity of the mix, not from underwatering.
