A soil thermometer (available at hardware stores for $8–$15) is the most reliable way to determine planting readiness. Checking air temperatures and doing calendar math for frost date only is the most common reason for poor lima bean germination.

In Zones 8–10 where summer temperatures exceed 95°F: lima beans drop flowers in extreme heat (above 90°F daytime). In these zones, timing a second planting in August or September for fall harvest avoids the July–August heat peak.

Soil preparation and planting

Lima beans are light feeders that perform best in slightly sandy, well-drained soil. Heavy clay soils hold too much moisture around seeds and roots, promoting rot. Compacted soil discourages the deep taproot that helps plants handle summer drought.

Soil pH: 6.0–6.8. Slightly acidic to neutral. Most US soils fall in this range without amendment.

What to add at planting:

  • 2–3 inches of compost worked into the top 6 inches of bed
  • Do not add nitrogen fertilizer—lima beans fix their own nitrogen. Extra nitrogen pushes leaf growth at the expense of pods.

Watering lima beans

Lima beans need consistent moisture from germination through pod fill. They are more drought-tolerant than peas after becoming established, but inconsistent watering during pod development causes empty pods (seeds don’t fill out).

Watering schedule:

Fertilizing lima beans

Lima beans fix nitrogen from the air through rhizobium bacteria in their root nodules. Do not add nitrogen fertilizer.

Nitrogen-heavy fertilizer (any product with a high first number, like 10-5-5 or 20-0-0) pushes excessive leaf growth while reducing pod set. The plant needs phosphorus and potassium, not nitrogen.

If you want to feed lima beans:

  • Add a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer at blossom set (something like 5-10-5)
  • Apply compost tea once during pod fill
  • Side-dress with compost at mid-season if plants look pale

Do not fertilize after pods are visible—late feeding pushes vegetative growth instead of pod development.

Common problems and how to fix them

Poor germination

Almost always a soil temperature problem. Soil below 65°F at 2-inch depth causes seed rot before germination. Wait longer, or use black plastic mulch to pre-warm the bed for 2 weeks before planting.

Flower drop without pod set

Caused by: temperatures above 90°F during flowering, soil moisture stress, or insecticide use that kills pollinators. Lima beans are bee-pollinated—eliminate pesticide applications during bloom.

Bean mosaic virus

Mexican bean beetle

The larvae (yellow, spiny) and adults (copper-colored, spotted) skeletonize leaves from the underside. Hand-pick eggs and young larvae. Apply spinosad or neem oil for larger infestations. The University of Florida Extension identifies Mexican bean beetle as the most economically damaging bean pest in the southeastern US.

Powdery mildew

White powdery coating on leaves in late summer, most common when nights are cool and days are warm (Zones 5–7 in August–September). Improve air circulation by keeping plants to proper spacing. Baking soda spray (1 tablespoon per gallon with a few drops of dish soap) reduces mild cases.

Harvesting lima beans: fresh vs dry

Fresh green lima beans (most home gardeners’ goal): harvest when pods are fully plump and seeds clearly visible as bumps through the pod wall, but before pods start to yellow. Pods that feel firm and full when squeezed are ready. Size varies: baby limas are picked when seeds are pea-size; Fordhook-type butter beans are ready when seeds fill the pod to 80–90% capacity.

Mature seeds for drying: Leave pods on the plant until they turn yellow and start to dry. Pull entire plants and hang in a dry, well-ventilated space for 2–3 weeks. Shell when pods are fully dry and seeds rattle inside.

Frequency of harvest: Bush varieties have one major flush; pick every 2–3 days to encourage the second flush and keep plants producing longer. Pole varieties produce continuously until frost—picking regularly is essential to keep plants in production mode.

Store fresh-picked lima beans in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or blanch and freeze for long-term storage.

Growing lima beans in containers

Bush lima bean varieties grow successfully in containers of 5 gallons or larger. Key requirements:

  • Full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Quality potting mix with 20% perlite for drainage
  • Consistent watering—every 1–2 days in summer heat
  • No nitrogen fertilizer; a single application of low-nitrogen slow-release at planting

Expect slightly reduced yields compared to in-ground plantings, but a 5-gallon container with Henderson Bush or Baby Fordhook can yield 1–2 pounds of fresh beans per season.
