Why propagating roses from cuttings works

The process costs nothing beyond a small amount of rooting hormone and a pot of perlite or sharp sand. Own-rooted roses propagated from cuttings produce plants that are genetically identical to the parent.

Most commercial roses are grafted: the desired flowering variety is budded onto a different rootstock chosen for vigor or disease resistance. Own-rooted roses propagated from cuttings never produce rootstock suckers because there is no separate rootstock. Every shoot and cane comes from the same genetics. Old garden roses, shrub roses, and species roses are almost always grown as own-rooted plants, and they propagate especially well from cuttings.

One practical note: many modern rose varieties introduced after 1930 are patented. In the US, patented plant varieties cannot be propagated and sold without a license from the originating breeder. Propagating patented roses for personal use (not sale) is a gray area, but propagating to sell is clearly prohibited. Old garden roses (pre-1867) and species roses are not patented.

Timing: when to take cuttings

Step by step:

1. Select the cutting material. Choose stems that have recently finished flowering — the stem just below a spent bloom is in the right growth stage. Stems should be pencil-thickness or slightly thinner.

2. Cut 6–8 inch sections. Make the bottom cut just below a leaf node (the point where a leaf attaches to the stem). Make the top cut 0.5 inch above a leaf node.

3. Remove leaves and buds. Strip all leaves from the bottom two-thirds of the cutting. Leave only the top 2–3 sets of leaves. Remove any flower buds or hips — these compete directly with root formation.

4. Wound the stem. Lightly scrape 1–2 inches of the bark from the bottom of the cutting using a knife or sandpaper. This exposes the cambium layer, which is most responsive to rooting hormone.

5. Apply rooting hormone. Dip the wounded bottom inch into IBA powder and tap off the excess, or apply IBA gel directly. Do not apply too much — excess hormone can inhibit rooting.

6. Stick cuttings in medium. Insert the prepared end 2–3 inches deep into a pot of moistened perlite or perlite-peat mix. One cutting per 4-inch pot works well.

7. Create humidity. Cover pots with clear plastic bags or clear plastic bottles with caps removed to allow minimal air circulation. The goal is 80–90% relative humidity around the cutting.

Maintaining cuttings during the rooting period

Place covered cuttings in bright indirect light — not direct sun, which overheats the enclosed humidity dome and stresses the cuttings. A north-facing window or a sheltered spot under outdoor shade cloth works well.

Temperature for rooting: 65–75°F. Bottom heat from a seedling heat mat improves rooting speed in spring and fall when ambient temperatures are lower.

Water management: the medium should stay barely moist — not wet, not dry. Open the humidity cover briefly every 2–3 days to check. Mist the cuttings lightly if the medium feels dry at the surface.

Signs of rooting success:

  • New leaves emerging at the top of the cutting — the most reliable sign
  • Gentle resistance when you tug lightly on the stem

Signs of failure:

  • Stem blackening or softening at the base (rot from excess moisture)
  • Leaves turning yellow and dropping with no new growth after 6 weeks

If cuttings fail, troubleshoot by reducing watering and improving air circulation. The most common failure is too much moisture causing stem rot, not too little.

Potting up rooted cuttings

Once cuttings show clear signs of rooting (new growth plus gentle resistance on light tug), gradually remove the humidity dome over 7–10 days. Sudden exposure to low humidity after 4–8 weeks in high humidity causes rapid leaf wilting.

After hardening off, transplant rooted cuttings to 1-gallon pots of regular potting mix. Grow in a protected spot — partial shade outdoors or inside near a bright window — for 2–4 more weeks before exposing to full sun.

Hardwood cuttings taken in November–January are the traditional rose propagation method for gardeners in cold climates. The stems are fully woody and can tolerate cold storage.

Process:

  1. Cut pencil-diameter stems into 6–8 inch sections, making the bottom cut just below a node
  2. Bundle 5–10 cuttings together with rubber bands, keeping all bottoms oriented the same direction
  3. Store in a plastic bag with barely moist peat moss in the refrigerator at 35–40°F for 6–8 weeks (cold stratification mimics winter)
  4. In late winter, remove from storage and stick into pots of moist perlite in a warm room (65–70°F)
  5. New growth and root formation begin within 4–6 weeks
