What mulch actually does

A 3-inch mulch layer does three things simultaneously: it blocks sunlight that would otherwise germinate weed seeds, it slows evaporation from the soil surface, and it moderates soil temperature swings between hot days and cool nights.

That’s the functional case for mulch. But not all mulch types deliver these three benefits equally, and some types actively harm plant health or soil structure. The right choice depends on what you’re mulching—vegetable beds, trees, perennials, paths, or slopes.

Organic mulches

Straw (not hay)

Description: The dried stems of wheat, oat, or other grain crops after harvest. Not to be confused with hay, which is cut grass containing seeds.

This is an important distinction: straw contains few or no weed seeds. Hay is full of them. Mistakenly buying hay instead of straw adds thousands of weed seeds to your garden.

Black plastic mulch

Description: Black polyethylene sheeting laid over beds, held down with soil or staples.

Benefits:

  • Raises soil temperature 5–8°F—meaningfully extends the season in Zones 4–5 for tomatoes, peppers, melons, and eggplant
  • Eliminates virtually all weeds in covered area
  • Retains soil moisture effectively

Drawbacks:

  • Must be removed at season’s end (or it degrades into plastic fragments)
  • Doesn’t work with direct seeding—plants must go through holes cut in the plastic
  • Gets very hot in Zones 7–9 summers—overheats roots of heat-sensitive plants

Use: Lay plastic 1–2 weeks before transplanting to pre-warm soil; cut 4–6 inch X slits for transplants.

Landscape fabric (weed barrier)

This product deserves a direct assessment: landscape fabric is not a good mulch substitute for most garden applications.

It works well for 1–3 years, then weed roots grow through it and tie into the fabric, making it harder to remove than the weeds it was meant to stop. Soil underneath landscape fabric compacts, loses aeration, and degrades over time. It blocks organic matter from reaching the soil.

Landscape fabric performs adequately only under permanent gravel or rock paths where no plant roots will penetrate. Everywhere else, organic mulch outperforms it in cost, soil health, and long-term weed suppression.

Mulch application tips

How much mulch do you need?

Coverage at 3-inch depth: 1 cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet.

Quick formula: (square footage × 0.25 feet deep) / 27 = cubic yards needed.

Example: a 300 square foot garden at 3 inches: (300 × 0.25) / 27 = 2.8 cubic yards.

Application rules:

  • Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from stems and trunks. Piled against stems causes rot and provides pest habitat.
  • Apply after soil is moist, not dry. Mulch seals in existing moisture; don’t seal in dry soil.
  • For annual beds, work previous year’s decomposed mulch into the soil before applying fresh mulch.
  • In spring, wait until soil reaches 60°F before mulching vegetable beds. Mulching cold soil keeps it cold.
