Group 3 includes the most widely sold US cultivars: ‘Jackmanii’, ‘Ville de Lyon’, ‘Polish Spirit’, and most viticella hybrids. If you bought a clematis at a US garden center without checking the tag closely, there is a good chance it is a Group 3.

Group 1 clematis: minimal die-back, most vulnerable to wrong pruning

Group 1 clematis — including Clematis montana, C. macropetala, and C. alpina — bloom in early spring on wood that developed the previous season. In Zones 6–9, the vine may stay semi-evergreen through winter and flower heavily in March or April before other plants have fully leafed out.

The critical rule with Group 1: do not cut them hard. Gardeners who prune Group 1 plants to a short stub in fall or early spring are removing the wood that carries every flower bud. These plants should be left alone through winter. The only pruning needed is removing dead, damaged, or overcrowded stems immediately after flowering ends in spring.

In Zones 4–5, Group 1 stems experience significant dieback. The vine may look dead by January, but the root system remains intact. Resist the urge to prune in fall. Allow natural die-back through winter, then remove dead material in late April once you can see clearly what is alive.

Group 2 clematis: large-flowered types with partial die-back

Group 3 clematis: hard die-back and the most forgiving management

Group 3 clematis die hard every winter in most US climates. ‘Jackmanii’, the most-planted clematis in the US, dies to a 12–18 inch stub in Zone 6. In Zone 4, it may die to the crown. This sounds severe but is normal — the plant regenerates vigorously from below-ground tissue and can put on 8–12 feet of growth between May and August.

The management is simple: cut Group 3 plants to 12–18 inches in late winter (late February in Zones 6–7, late March in Zones 4–5). Make the cut just above a healthy pair of buds. Then step back. The plant does the rest.

One common mistake is cutting Group 3 plants in fall rather than late winter. The dead stem structure left through winter protects the crown from temperature swings and provides a visual marker of where the plant is located. Make the pruning cut in late winter when you can see emerging growth at the base.

The viticella group — including Clematis varieties like ‘Polish Spirit’ and ‘Etoile Violette’ — are Group 3 plants known for exceptional disease resistance and vigorous regrowth even in Zone 4. What to do if your clematis appears dead in spring

The scratch test: run your thumbnail across a low stem near the crown. Green tissue under the bark indicates the plant is alive and simply slow. Dry, brittle, brown tissue throughout indicates dead wood — cut down to where live tissue begins.

If the entire stem structure is dead but the root system is intact, new basal shoots often appear from the soil by mid-May. These emerge as reddish-purple tips and grow rapidly once soil temperature reaches 55°F.
