Azalea zones: matching variety to climate
Zone selection is the single most important decision before purchase. An evergreen Kurume hybrid rated to Zone 7 will die to the ground in a Zone 5 winter. A northern-bred deciduous type will look weak and fail to rebloom in the heat of Zone 9.

Northern Lights hybrids deserve special mention. Soil pH: the requirement most US gardeners miss
Azaleas need soil pH between 4.5 and 6.0. In alkaline or neutral soil, they develop iron chlorosis — yellow leaves with green veins — because iron becomes chemically unavailable even when it is physically present in the soil. No fertilizer fixes this without first correcting pH.
Most US garden soils test between pH 6.0 and 7.5. The Southeast has naturally acidic soils in many areas (pH 5.0–6.0), which explains why azaleas thrive there without amendment. The Midwest, Mountain West, and Pacific Coast typically have neutral to alkaline soils that need amendment before azaleas will perform.

How to plant an azalea correctly
The most common planting mistake is setting the root ball at grade level or below. Azalea roots are shallow and the crown must stay above grade for good drainage. In most US soils, planting too deep causes collar rot within 1–3 years.
- Test soil pH. Target 4.5–6.0 before planting.
- Choose a site with morning sun and afternoon shade, or dappled light under deciduous trees.
- Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper than the root ball height.
- Amend backfill with 50% pine bark fines or aged compost.
- Set the root ball so its top sits 1–2 inches above the surrounding soil surface.
- Water in deeply. Do not compact the backfill.
- Apply a 3-inch layer of pine bark or pine needle mulch. Keep mulch 2 inches from the stem.
- Water 1–2 times weekly for 6 weeks until established.
The elevated planting depth — root ball crown above grade — is the detail most often ignored. It is critical in clay soils, which drain slowly and keep the crown wet.
Pruning azaleas without losing next year’s flowers
The 4–6 week window after bloom ends is the only time to prune azaleas without sacrificing flowers. After that, buds set for the following spring. Pruning in summer, fall, or winter removes those buds and results in a healthy plant with no blooms the next spring.
By USDA zone:
- Zone 9 (Southeast/Southwest): Bloom March; prune March–April

Plants in full sun are more vulnerable than those in shade. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil in late May when the first generation of nymphs hatches.
Iron chlorosis is the most commonly misdiagnosed problem. Gardeners see yellow leaves and add more fertilizer — often high-nitrogen fertilizer — which makes no difference because the problem is pH, not nutrient deficiency. Test pH first. Apply chelated iron spray as a fast temporary fix while adjusting pH long-term.
