Boxwood is not one plant — it is a genus of 70+ species, and the type you choose determines cold hardiness, heat tolerance, disease resistance, and growth rate. Three species account for the vast majority of US sales.

For cold climates in Zones 4–5 (northern Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin), Korean boxwood and its hybrid selections are the only reliable options. English boxwood is unreliable in Zone 4 and below. For hot climates in Zones 8–9 (Gulf Coast, Phoenix), Japanese boxwood hybrids tolerate heat better than English types.
Boxwood planting guide
Plant boxwood in fall or early spring for best root establishment. Fall planting gives roots time to establish before summer heat arrives. Spring planting works well too, but requires more attention to watering in the first summer.
Planting steps:
- Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and exactly as deep — not deeper
- Set the plant so the root ball top is level with or very slightly above grade
- Backfill with the same native soil — do not amend with compost (this creates a drainage barrier between the amended hole and surrounding soil)
- Water thoroughly at planting
- Apply 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping mulch 6 inches away from the stem base
Spacing for hedges: Space plants at 50–75% of their mature width for eventual full coverage. For a hedge of ‘Green Mountain’ boxwood (mature width 3–4 feet), plant 2–2.5 feet on center.
Soil requirements: Boxwood tolerates a wide range of soil types but must have good drainage. It fails in wet sites, clay that holds water, or areas that puddle after rain. If your soil drains slowly, plant on a raised berm or add coarse gravel to improve drainage before planting.
pH: 6.5–7.5. Slightly acidic to neutral. In strongly acidic soils below pH 6.0, boxwood shows nutrient deficiencies (pale, yellowish leaves). A simple soil pH test from your local cooperative extension will tell you if lime is needed.
Sun and water requirements
Boxwood tolerates full sun to full shade, but part shade — 4–6 hours of direct sun with afternoon protection — is best for most US climates. Full afternoon sun in Zones 7–9 causes leaf scorch and shallow root drying that stresses plants even with regular irrigation.
The ideal exposure: morning sun, afternoon shade, or dappled shade through the day. North-facing foundations and east-facing beds are often the best spots for boxwood in hot climates.
Established boxwood (after 1–2 seasons in the ground) is moderately drought-tolerant. In its first year, water weekly during dry periods — 1 inch of water per week total from rain and irrigation. After establishment, supplement only during drought periods longer than 3–4 weeks.
Winter watering: In Zones 5–6, boxwood benefits from a thorough watering in late fall before the ground freezes. Winter desiccation — where leaves lose moisture to wind and sun while frozen roots cannot absorb water — is a major cause of winter damage and bronzing.
How and when to prune boxwood
Prune boxwood once in late spring, after the flush of new growth has hardened off. This is typically late May through early June in Zones 5–7. The new growth hardens from soft and light-green to a firmer, darker color as it matures — that transition is your cue to prune.
Why late spring matters:
- New growth after pruning has all summer to harden before winter
- Late summer pruning (August) stimulates new growth that winter damage hits hard
- Pruning in winter removes healthy tissue unnecessarily
For formal hedges: use hedge shears or an electric hedge trimmer for large hedges. Cut to the desired shape, beveling slightly so the base is slightly wider than the top. This allows light to reach the bottom foliage and prevents the typical bottom-die-off of poorly pruned hedges.
For specimen plants: use hand pruners to selectively remove stray branches and thin dense interior growth. Removing 20–30% of interior growth improves air circulation, which reduces fungal disease risk.
Do not shear boxwood into hard balls or tight geometric shapes and leave them that way year after year. Interior growth dies out as light can’t penetrate. The result is a hollow, fragile shell. Light shaping that maintains some natural form is healthier.

Boxwood blight: what you need to know
Boxwood blight (Calonectria pseudonaviculata) is the most serious disease threat facing US boxwood plantings. It spreads through infected plant material, contaminated tools, and wet weather. It can kill established plants within weeks of first symptoms appearing.
Boxwood blight presence in the US: first confirmed in Connecticut in 2011. As of 2024, it has been confirmed in 32 states. States with confirmed blight include most of the Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast. The USDA APHIS maintains a current state-by-state map.
Symptoms:
- Circular tan or straw-colored leaf spots with dark borders
- Rapid defoliation — plants can drop most of their leaves within 1–2 weeks
- Dark brown to black streaking on green stems
- White fungal growth on undersides of infected leaves in humid conditions
Prevention:
- Choose resistant or tolerant varieties (see variety table below)
- Space plants at least 18–24 inches apart for good air circulation
- Water at the base, never overhead
- Clean pruning tools with a 10% bleach solution between plants
- Do not compost diseased material — bag and dispose of it

Japanese holly (Ilex crenata) is not a boxwood at all but is the most common substitute in blight-affected areas. It looks similar, has the same formal garden appeal, and is completely immune to boxwood blight.
Other common boxwood problems
Boxwood leafminer (Monarthropalpus flavus) is the most widespread boxwood pest in the US. Adult midges lay eggs in May; larvae tunnel inside leaves through summer, creating blister-like leaf swellings visible by midsummer.
Treatment: imidacloprid systemic insecticide applied as a soil drench in spring provides 12 months of control. Time application 2–3 weeks before adult emergence in May in Zones 5–7 (late April in Zone 8).
Boxwood psyllid causes cupped, distorted new growth in spring. Damage is cosmetic. No treatment needed beyond pruning away affected growth.
Volutella blight causes branch die-back and pink to salmon-colored spore masses on infected stems. Remove and destroy affected branches. Improve air circulation by selective thinning.
Winter burn shows as bronzed, tan, or orange foliage in early spring — particularly on the windward side of the plant. It is caused by desiccation from winter wind and sun. It is cosmetic and typically reverses to green by late spring. Burlap windscreens reduce winter burn on exposed plants in Zones 5–6.
