Fig trees in the US: what you need to know

Edible fig trees (Ficus carica) grow in the ground across USDA Zones 7–11 and in containers throughout all 50 states. They are among the easiest fruit trees to grow in warmer US climates — drought-tolerant once established, minimal pest problems, and productive within 2–3 years of planting.

The US has a long fig-growing history. Spanish missionaries planted figs at California missions in the 1700s, establishing the foundation of today’s commercial crop. California still grows 98% of US commercial figs, primarily Calimyrna and Black Mission varieties. Home gardeners grow a wider range, including cold-hardy types adapted to Zones 5–7.

Figs are one of the most forgiving fruit trees in warm climates: they tolerate drought, produce without spray programs, and can be harvested over 4–8 weeks in late summer. The main challenges in the US are overwintering in Zones 5–7 and fruit-splitting from late-season rain.

For Zones 5–6: Chicago Hardy is the best first choice. It dies to the ground in severe winters but regrows vigorously from the roots. After a few years, the trunk base thickens and winter-kills less completely. Brown Turkey is the second best choice and produces a breba crop on old wood when winter kill is minimal.

For Zones 7–9: Nearly any variety grows reliably. Black Mission, Brown Turkey, Celeste, and LSU Purple all perform well. Celeste is the dominant home garden variety in the Southeast.

For containers (all zones): Almost any variety works in a 15–25 gallon container. Petite Negri and Little Ruby are dwarf types bred for container production and stay under 4 feet.

Where to plant fig trees

Figs need:

  • Full sun, 8+ hours daily. This is non-negotiable for fruit production. Less sun produces vegetative growth with poor fruiting.
  • Reflected heat in Zones 6–7. Plant against a south or west-facing masonry wall. The wall absorbs heat during the day and radiates it at night, moderating temperature swings and extending the growing season.
  • Good drainage. Figs tolerate dry soil but rot in waterlogged ground. Avoid low spots that collect water.
  • Protection from north wind in Zones 6–7. A building or hedge on the north side buffers cold winter winds and reduces winter kill.

Mature in-ground figs in Zone 9 reach 15–30 feet. In Zones 6–7 with annual winter die-back, plants typically stay under 10 feet. Container plants can be managed at any size through annual root pruning.

Planting fig trees step by step

Best planting times:

  • Zones 7–11: Spring or fall; fall planting gives roots more time to establish before summer heat
  • Zones 5–6: Spring only, after last frost date

Steps:

  1. Dig a hole 3 feet wide and 18 inches deep.
  2. Amend clay soils with 25% coarse sand to improve drainage. In sandy soils, add compost.
  3. Set the tree so the top of the root ball is level with or 1–2 inches above surrounding soil.
  4. Backfill, tamp lightly, and water thoroughly.
  5. Mulch with 3–4 inches of wood chips or straw, keeping mulch away from the trunk.
  6. Water deeply 1–2 times per week for the first 6–8 weeks.

Watering figs

Established in-ground figs in Zones 7–11 are drought-tolerant. Once the root system reaches 2–3 years of age, most figs need supplemental watering only during extended dry periods (2+ weeks without rain in summer).

New plantings need consistent moisture for the first 1–2 growing seasons: water deeply once or twice a week, letting the soil dry between waterings.

Container-grown figs need more frequent watering — large containers may need watering every 2–3 days in summer heat. Check the soil 2 inches down; water when it feels dry.

Timing matters for fruit quality: Consistent moisture during fruit development (4–6 weeks before harvest) produces better fruit. Irregular watering — dry periods followed by heavy rain — causes fruit to split.

Fertilizing fig trees

In-ground figs in good garden soil need minimal fertilizer. Over-fertilizing with nitrogen produces excessive leaf growth at the expense of fruit.

A simple fertilizing plan:

  • Spring: Apply 1/2 pound of 10-10-10 granular fertilizer per foot of tree height (up to 1 pound per application). Scratch into the soil surface.
  • Midsummer: Repeat if the tree shows slow growth or pale yellow leaves.
  • Fall: No fertilizer — late-season nitrogen growth is vulnerable to frost damage.

Container figs need more regular feeding. Apply a balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or 5-5-5) monthly during the growing season, following label rates.

Pruning fig trees

Figs produce fruit on two types of growth, which determines pruning timing:

  • Breba crop: Produced on previous year’s growth (old wood) in early summer (June–July in Zones 7–9)
  • Main crop: Produced on current year’s new growth, ripen late summer through fall

If you want the breba crop, do not prune old wood in spring. If you want to maximize the main crop only, prune old wood in early spring before new growth starts.

Annual pruning approach:

  1. In late winter/early spring, remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches.
  2. Remove any branches growing inward toward the center.
  3. Cut back any branches that extend beyond your desired height.
  4. Leave the main scaffold branches and fruiting spurs on old wood (for breba crop).

Container figs should be pruned more aggressively in early spring — remove 1/3 of old wood annually to keep the plant compact and encourage new fruiting growth.

Overwintering figs in Zones 5–7

In-ground figs in Zones 5–7 need winter protection to survive and to retain old wood for the breba crop. The approach depends on plant size and your zone.

Zone 7 (mild winters, occasional hard freezes):

  • Mulch the root zone with 6 inches of straw or wood chips in November
  • Wrap the trunk and lower branches in burlap if a hard freeze (below 10°F) is forecast
  • Old wood typically survives; expect good breba crop in most years

Zones 5–6 (cold winters, regular hard freezes):

  • Mulch root zone with 6–8 inches of straw starting in early December
  • Bend and tie branches together, then wrap in burlap or hardware cloth stuffed with straw
  • Underground root system survives to Zone 4–5; above-ground growth may die to the ground
  • Even if top-killed, roots regrow new shoots in spring; these produce main crop fruit in the same year

Container overwintering (all Zones 1–6):

  • Move containers to an unheated garage or basement after first frost
  • Temperatures between 25°F and 45°F are ideal — cold enough to maintain dormancy, warm enough to prevent hard freezing
  • Water every 4–6 weeks during storage (roots need minimal moisture in dormancy)
  • Move back outdoors after last frost date in spring

When and how to harvest figs

Figs ripen unevenly over 4–8 weeks. Harvest daily when fruit is ripe — figs left on the tree past peak ripeness ferment and attract insects.

Signs of a ripe fig:

  • The neck (where fig meets stem) droops downward
  • Skin feels soft when gently squeezed, but not mushy
  • The fruit pulls free easily with a gentle upward twist
  • Skin may crack slightly at the base

Signs of an unripe fig: Hard fruit, neck pointing upward, milky sap at the base when picked.

Root-knot nematodes are the most serious chronic problem for figs in Southeast US soils. These microscopic soil pests attack fig roots and cause chronic stress. Container fig growing for US gardeners in cold climates

Container growing makes figs accessible to gardeners in Zones 3–6 who cannot grow them in-ground reliably. A fig in a 25-gallon container on a south-facing patio produces 20–40 fruit annually and can be wheeled into shelter before the first frost.

Container setup:

  • Use a 15–25 gallon container with drainage holes
  • Fill with a potting mix blended for good drainage: 60% potting mix, 30% perlite, 10% bark
  • Place on casters for easy movement at season’s end
  • Provide full sun on a south-facing wall or patio

Root prune every 2–3 years in early spring: remove the tree from the pot, cut 2–3 inches from the root ball all around, and replant in fresh potting mix in the same container. This keeps the plant from becoming root-bound and maintains vigor without requiring an ever-larger pot.
