How to deadhead marigolds properly

Deadheading is the single most important maintenance task for continuous bloom from June through frost.

When to deadhead: Remove flowers when the petals begin to brown and wither, before the seed head swells. A flower that has formed a seed head has already redirected energy from bloom production to seed ripening.

How to do it: Pinch or cut the spent stem back to the nearest set of healthy leaves. If you simply snap off the flower head and leave the bare stem, the plant grows that stem back before producing a new flower — slower results.
