Crabgrass: Control and Prevention

Crabgrass takes over lawns and garden beds fast. Learn to identify it, kill it before it seeds, and prevent it from coming back in US yards.

Crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) is the most common lawn weed complaint in the US. Two species dominate: smooth crabgrass (D. ischaemum) and large crabgrass (D. sanguinalis). Penn State Extension reports germination begins when soil temperatures hold at 55–65°F for five or more days — April in USDA Zones 6–7, as early as March in Zone 9–10.

What crabgrass actually is — and why it wins

Crabgrass is a warm-season annual grass that germinates from seed each spring, grows aggressively through summer, sets thousands of seeds, then dies at frost. The cycle repeats each year from the seed bank it builds in your soil.

Two species cause nearly all problems in US lawns and gardens:

  • Large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis): Reaches 2 feet tall, hairy stems and leaf blades, most common in the eastern US from Zone 4 to Zone 9
  • Smooth crabgrass (Digitaria ischaemum): Shorter and more compact, hairless stems, found coast to coast and especially problematic in thin lawns

Both spread only by seed. One crabgrass plant can produce up to 150,000 seeds in a single season, which remain viable in the soil for 3–5 years. That’s why a small outbreak can become a lawn-wide problem within two seasons if seeds are allowed to set.

How to identify crabgrass

Crabgrass is easiest to spot by its growth pattern. Look for:

  • Radiating star pattern: stems and tillers spread outward from a central root point, resembling a crab or wagon spokes
  • Wider leaf blades than your lawn grass — noticeably coarser texture
  • Low, sprawling growth that stays flat even when the surrounding lawn grass stands upright
  • Seed heads in mid-to-late summer: finger-like spikes of 3–9 branches radiating from a central point, turning purplish as seeds mature

When in doubt, look at the base of the stem. Goosegrass has a distinctive white or silver stem base, almost bleached in appearance. Crabgrass stems are green throughout.

When crabgrass germinates in your region

Soil temperature, not calendar date, triggers crabgrass germination. Seeds sprout when soil temperature at 2 inches depth holds at 55–65°F for 5 or more consecutive days.

The forsythia trick is a reliable free indicator: crabgrass typically germinates just as forsythia blooms are dropping. If forsythia is blooming in your area, you have about 2 weeks before the prime crabgrass germination window opens.

Pre-emergent herbicides: the most effective approach

Pre-emergent herbicides don’t kill germinated plants — they prevent germination by blocking the development of the seedling root tip. Apply them before crabgrass seeds sprout, and you stop the problem before it begins.

Timing is the only thing that matters

Apply when soil temperature at 2 inches is 50–55°F and holding there. A $12 soil thermometer is far more accurate than any calendar. I check at 7 am for several consecutive days to confirm the soil is warming.

Applying too early is less harmful than applying too late. Pre-emergents last 6–8 weeks, so timing 2–3 weeks before the germination window is fine.

Common pre-emergent active ingredients

  • Prodiamine (Barricade, Turf Fertilizers with Barricade): Long residual, 8–10 weeks. Available in granular and liquid. Safe for most lawn grass types
  • Dithiopyr (Dimension): Provides some early post-emergent activity on very young seedlings (1-leaf stage). Good flexibility if timing is uncertain
  • Pendimethalin (Scotts Halts Crabgrass Preventer): Widely available at garden centers, effective, shorter residual than prodiamine

What not to plant after pre-emergent application

Pre-emergents prevent all seed germination — not just weeds. Wait 8–12 weeks after application before seeding lawn grass or garden vegetables from seed. Check the product label for exact timing.

Newly seeded lawns cannot receive pre-emergent treatment for the first season. This is a common problem in newly seeded areas, which are particularly vulnerable to crabgrass in their first year.

Post-emergent options: what works after it sprouts

Once crabgrass has germinated and you can see it growing, your options are more limited. Post-emergent herbicides are most effective on young plants with 1–4 tillers and become less effective as plants mature.

Quinclorac (most widely available)

Quinclorac is the active ingredient in most consumer crabgrass post-emergents, including Ortho Weed-B-Gon Crabgrass Killer and Scotts Spot-Treat Lawn Weed Killer.

Effectiveness by growth stage:

  • 1–2 tillers: 85–95% effective
  • 3–4 tillers: 60–80% effective
  • 5+ tillers or seed-set stage: Less than 50% effective — not worth the cost

Quinclorac requires several applications (usually 2–3 at 7–14 day intervals) for complete control. It’s safe on most cool-season turf grasses. Check label compatibility for warm-season grasses — it’s not safe on all varieties.

Fluazifop-P-butyl and sethoxydim (for garden beds)

For vegetable beds and flower beds where you cannot use lawn herbicides, fluazifop (Fusilade II, Grass-B-Gon) and sethoxydim (Poast) kill crabgrass and other grassy weeds without harming broadleaf plants, vegetables, or ornamentals.

These are selective grass killers. They’re more expensive than spot treatments but invaluable when crabgrass invades a mixed garden bed.

Manual removal (always an option)

Pulling crabgrass by hand or with a weeding tool works well for small infestations or in vegetable beds where herbicides are undesirable.

Best technique:

  • Pull when soil is moist (after rain or irrigation) — roots release cleanly
  • Use a CobraHead weeder or similar hand tool to sever the stem below the junction where tillers meet
  • Remove before seed heads develop — late July through August is the critical window to prevent seed set

The single most important cultural practice

Mowing at 3–4 inches is the most effective thing a US lawn owner can do to reduce crabgrass. This isn’t a marginal benefit — it’s the biggest single cultural factor.

Crabgrass seeds need light to germinate. A dense, tall lawn shades the soil surface and soil temperatures stay lower longer in spring. A lawn mowed at 2 inches or less removes that shade canopy and creates ideal crabgrass germination conditions.

Research from the University of Maryland Extension found that lawns mowed at 3.5 inches had 66% less crabgrass than lawns mowed at 1.5 inches — without any herbicide use.

Other cultural practices that suppress crabgrass:

  • Overseed thin areas in fall: Thick turf crowds out crabgrass. Bare or thin patches are the first places crabgrass establishes. Overseeding in early fall (8–10 weeks before first frost) fills gaps before spring.
  • Water deeply and infrequently: Crabgrass thrives with frequent shallow irrigation. Watering deeply (1 inch per week) once or twice encourages deeper lawn root growth and less crabgrass-favorable surface moisture.
  • Fertilize in fall, not only spring: Fall nitrogen feeding promotes dense turf going into winter and in spring. Heavy spring fertilization favors crabgrass by pushing rapid growth that thins out over summer.

Crabgrass in vegetable and flower beds

In garden beds, crabgrass management is entirely mechanical and organic. Herbicides safe for lawns are not safe around vegetables, and most are not labeled for food gardens.

Prevention in beds

  • Mulch 2–3 inches deep: Organic mulch blocks light and prevents most crabgrass germination. This is the most effective organic prevention. Use in a raised bed garden or in-ground beds equally.
  • Landscape fabric (under mulch): Stops nearly all germination but must be combined with mulch to block light reaching fabric edges
  • Pre-irrigate then cultivate: Watering beds before planting encourages germination of any waiting seeds, which you then hoe off before planting your crops

Removal in beds

A stirrup hoe (loop hoe) works faster than a standard hoe for crabgrass in beds. The cutting blade operates on both the push and pull stroke, and cuts the stem cleanly at the soil surface. This is faster than hand-pulling and less disruptive to nearby plant roots.

Remove crabgrass from beds before it sets seeds in late summer. Once seed heads appear (fingers of seeds radiating outward), pulling the plant spreads seed in the process — cut the stem at soil level instead and dispose of the top away from the garden.

Does vinegar kill crabgrass?

Household vinegar (5% acetic acid) burns crabgrass foliage on contact but does not kill the root system. Plants regrow within 7–14 days. Horticultural vinegar (20–30% acetic acid) is more damaging but still doesn’t kill established roots reliably.

Vinegar is not an effective crabgrass killer for established plants. It’s most useful for very young seedlings (single-leaf stage) when contact burn can kill the entire plant before roots develop.

Working with a soil test

If you’re dealing with a major crabgrass problem year after year, a soil pH test is worth doing. Lawn grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) compete best at pH 6.2–7.0. Outside that range, turf becomes thin and crabgrass fills in.

Lime to raise pH, sulfur to lower it. Correcting soil pH over 1–2 seasons combined with pre-emergent application and higher mowing heights provides long-term control that outperforms any single herbicide program.
