What is the European hornet?

European hornet (Vespa crabro) is the only true hornet established in the eastern United States. Workers measure 1–1.5 inches — roughly three times the size of a yellowjacket. They build papery nests inside hollow trees, attics, and wall voids, and unlike most US stinging insects, they are active after dark.

The species arrived in the northeastern US in the 1840s, likely through shipments of timber or nursery stock. It has spread steadily southward and is now found from the Gulf Coast states north to southern Canada, and as far west as the Great Plains. Penn State Extension reports European hornet as one of the more common large wasp complaints from homeowners in the eastern US from July through October.

The European hornet is not the “murder hornet” — that is the northern giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia), an Asian species found in very small numbers in the Pacific Northwest. European hornets are common, established, and manageable. Northern giant hornets are rare and federally tracked.

How to identify a European hornet

European hornet is large enough that most people notice it immediately. The size alone — a flying insect nearly as big as your thumb — triggers alarm. Accurate identification helps you respond correctly.

The reddish-orange head and thorax are the clearest field markers. Most people describe them as “brown and yellow” at first glance, but up close the warm orange-brown on the upper body distinguishes them from the sharper black-and-yellow of yellowjackets.

Behavior clues

European hornets are some of the only stinging insects in the US that fly regularly at night. If you see a large stinging insect circling a porch light or coming toward interior lights through an open window after dark, European hornet is the likely identification.

They are also unusually audible. Workers produce a distinctive loud buzz — louder than yellowjackets of similar size — that some people describe as resembling a large bumblebee.

Where European hornets nest

Nest location is one of the clearest differences between European hornets and yellowjackets. Yellowjackets commonly nest underground. European hornets almost never do.

Typical European hornet nest sites:

  • Hollow trees — most common in wooded or suburban yards
  • Attic spaces — especially in homes near wooded areas
  • Wall voids — exterior walls, hollow porch columns, shutters
  • Old barns and sheds — any undisturbed cavity works
  • Large bird boxes — occasionally used if large enough

Nests are made from chewed wood fiber mixed with saliva, producing a gray papery material. Active nests have a roughly oval shape and can reach the size of a basketball by fall — colonies can hold 200–400 workers at peak in late summer.

The nest entrance is usually a single opening at the bottom of the cavity. You may see workers entering and exiting steadily during daylight hours and continuing into the evening — both are normal.

Locating a hidden nest

Hidden nests inside walls or attics announce themselves through:

  • Buzzing sounds that intensify after dark
  • Workers appearing near small gaps in siding, soffit, or trim
  • Workers flying toward a specific point on your house exterior at night

A flashlight inspection at dusk — watching from 20+ feet — usually reveals the entrance point within a few minutes.

How European hornets damage plants

This is an aspect most garden sources underreport. European hornets are one of a small number of US insects that actively damage ornamental woody plants.

Workers strip bark from young stems to access phloem sap and to harvest fiber for nest construction. Target plants in the eastern US include:

  • Lilac (Syringa spp.) — particularly new growth in summer
  • Ash (Fraxinus spp.)
  • Rhododendron and azalea
  • Rose canes
  • Ornamental cherry and birch

The damage looks like bands of missing bark 1–4 inches long on stems roughly 0.25–0.5 inches in diameter. Heavily girdled stems die back from the wound point. A single nest near a lilac bush or rose bush care situation can damage dozens of stems per season.

You will often see the hornets working the stems in early evening or just after dark — they chew in short sessions and return multiple times.

Protecting valued shrubs: Wrap target stems with row cover fabric from mid-June through September. This stops access without harming the plant. Aluminum foil also works as a deterrent. Removing the nest source is more permanent but may not be practical if it is inside a tree cavity or wall void.

Are European hornets dangerous to people?

European hornets can sting and their sting is medically significant. Several facts matter for practical risk assessment:

  • Workers sting to defend the nest, not foragers away from it
  • A single worker foraging on your lilac or approaching a light is not typically aggressive toward people
  • Near the nest entrance — especially if disturbed — defensive stinging can be intense and multiple stings can happen rapidly
  • Venom allergy is the primary medical risk; people with known bee or wasp venom allergy should treat any encounter with caution

A normal response to a single sting is localized pain, redness, and swelling lasting a few hours. Stings in or near the mouth, nose, or eyes carry higher risk from local swelling. Anaphylaxis is possible in sensitized individuals — if you have had a severe reaction to any stinging insect previously, carry an epinephrine auto-injector when working near known nests.

Children and pets near a nest should be kept well away. The threat zone is roughly 6–10 feet from the nest entrance.

How to remove a European hornet nest

Outdoor accessible nests

Nests in visible outdoor cavities — a hollow fence post, an open tree hollow — are the easiest to treat.

Materials: Wasp and hornet spray with a 20-foot jet stream. Do not use products that require close approach.

Timing: Treat at night, 2–3 hours after dark, when nearly all workers are inside and movement is low. European hornets remain active at night but cluster inside the nest, making treatment more effective and reducing encounter risk.

Protective clothing: Long sleeves, gloves, and eye protection at minimum. A beekeeper veil is worth it near a large nest.

Method: Apply the spray into the nest entrance for 5–10 seconds. Retreat 20+ feet. Check for worker exit the next morning. Apply a second treatment the following night if activity continues. Remove the nest only after 48 hours of zero worker activity.

Wall void and attic nests

Do not treat these yourself unless you are a licensed pest control professional. The reasons:

  1. Treating into a wall void without knowing the nest location can push hornets further into the wall structure
  2. Sealing the entrance before the colony is dead traps hornets inside — they may then chew through interior drywall to escape
  3. Dead nest material in a wall void can attract secondary pests including stored product insects and carpet beetles

Contact a licensed exterminator for wall and attic nests. They have the tools, access, and chemical options to treat these properly.

Tree cavity nests

These are the trickiest. A nest inside a living tree cannot be excavated without damaging the tree. Options:

  • Treat the entrance with a long-jet wasp spray for 2–3 consecutive nights in August or September
  • Wait until November when cold kills the colony naturally — European hornet colonies do not overwinter, so the nest is abandoned and non-functional by December
  • If the nest is causing a safety hazard near a walking path or children’s play area, consult an arborist about tree management options

Other indoor pests that enter through similar pathways

European hornets enter wall voids through small gaps in siding, trim, and soffit — the same entry points used by clover mites and other small pests in fall. Sealing these gaps with caulk or expanding foam after the colony dies prevents future use by any species.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed pest control company when:

  • The nest is in a wall void or attic space
  • The nest entrance is above 10 feet
