Control methods that actually work

Let the soil dry out

This is the most effective control available and costs nothing. Let the top 2 inches of soil dry completely between waterings. This environment kills eggs and young larvae, which cannot survive without moisture.

Check moisture by pushing your finger 2 inches into the soil. Water only when that layer feels fully dry.

Bottom watering

Bottom watering places your pot in a tray of water and lets the soil draw moisture from below. The top inch of soil stays dry while roots get what they need.

Yellow sticky traps

Yellow sticky traps catch adult gnats and reduce the breeding population. They do not kill soil larvae, but they slow reproduction by trapping females before they can lay new batches of eggs.

Place traps at soil level — not elevated on plant stakes. Adults fly low near the soil. Traps set high catch far fewer gnats.

Hydrogen peroxide soil drench

Recipe: Mix 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide (standard drugstore brown-bottle formulation) with 4 parts water. This produces a 0.6% solution.

Application: Water normally with this solution until it drains from the pot bottom. You will see mild fizzing at the soil surface — the peroxide reacting with organic matter. Apply once, wait 5 days, and apply again.

Two treatments 5 days apart breaks the larval population cycle in most infestations. Do not exceed the recommended dilution. A 3% solution diluted to 0.6% kills larvae and is safe for healthy roots. Undiluted hydrogen peroxide will burn plant tissue.

BTi granules (Mosquito Bits)

BTi stands for Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis, a naturally occurring soil bacterium that kills fly and mosquito larvae. It is harmless to plants, people, pets, birds, and the beneficial insects that pollinate your garden.

BTi is sold as Mosquito Bits (Summit Chemical) or Gnat Nix at hardware stores and garden centers nationwide.

Granule method: Sprinkle the granules on the soil surface at label rate. Water them in so they contact the top 2 inches of soil. Reapply every 30 days.

BTi tea method: Soak 4 tablespoons of Mosquito Bits in 1 gallon of water for 30 minutes. Strain and use the liquid to water your plants. This carries BTi deeper into the root zone where larvae feed.

The EPA classifies BTi as a biopesticide with minimal environmental risk. It is registered for use around edible plants and near water. BTi works best when combined with letting the soil dry — the bacteria activate in moist soil but work fastest when larvae are feeding actively.

Neem oil soil drench

Neem oil contains azadirachtin, which disrupts insect growth and development. As a soil drench, it reduces larval populations over 2–3 weeks.

Mix neem oil at label directions (usually 1–2 tablespoons per gallon with a few drops of dish soap as emulsifier). Apply every 7–14 days for 3–4 treatments.

Neem has a strong sulfur smell that many people find unpleasant indoors. It works better on outdoor containers or greenhouse plants where ventilation is adequate.

Controls that do not work

Cinnamon on the soil surface: No peer-reviewed research supports cinnamon as a fungus gnat control. It has mild antifungal properties but does not kill larvae or deter egg-laying adults.

Apple cider vinegar traps: These catch some adult gnats, but yellow sticky traps outperform them significantly. Gnats respond more strongly to the visual cue of yellow color than to vinegar smell. Spend the $5 on sticky traps instead.

How to treat a severe infestation step by step

If sticky cards are catching more than 20 adults per day, use a combined approach.

Day 1: Apply hydrogen peroxide soil drench to every affected pot. Set yellow sticky traps at soil level on every plant.

Day 5: Apply a second H2O2 drench. Replace saturated traps.
