Everbearing strawberries produce two distinct harvest windows per season — once in late spring to early summer and again in August through October — rather than one concentrated crop. This makes them the better choice for home gardeners who want a longer fresh-eating season rather than a large single harvest for preserving.

June-bearing varieties (the most widely grown commercial type) produce an enormous burst of berries over 2–3 weeks in June, then nothing for the rest of the season. This suits jam-making and freezing — you get a large volume at once. For eating fresh berries over a longer window, everbearing types are more practical.

Day-neutral varieties are a subset of everbearers worth understanding separately. True everbearing types are triggered by day length (long days in spring, shorter days in fall). Day-neutral varieties like ‘Albion’ and ‘Seascape’ produce fruit regardless of day length, from June through October, as long as temperatures stay between 35°F and 85°F. Everbearing strawberries grow across a wide range of US zones, from Zone 3 through Zone 10. The key variable is which variety matches your climate.

  • Zones 3–4: Choose ‘Ozark Beauty’ or ‘Fort Laramie’ — both survive hard winters and produce reliably after harsh springs. Mulch heavily with straw in fall to protect crowns.
  • Zones 5–6: Most varieties perform well. ‘Albion’ and ‘Tristar’ are good general choices. Spring and fall crops are both reliable in this zone range.

When and how to plant everbearing strawberries

Plant everbearing strawberries in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked — 2–4 weeks before the last frost date. Bare-root crowns planted in March or early April establish faster than those planted in warm soil in May.

Spring is the preferred planting time across most of the US. In Zones 7–10, fall planting (September–October) is also effective and produces plants well-established to fruit the following spring.

Bare root vs transplants: Bare-root crowns (the most common form sold by mail order and garden centers) cost less and establish quickly if planted correctly. Container-grown transplants cost more but establish faster and can be planted later in spring. Both forms produce equally well after establishment.

Planting depth is critical: The crown (the thickened stem base where leaves emerge) must sit at soil level — not buried, not above. Crowns planted too deep rot; crowns planted too shallow dry out. This is the most common planting mistake with strawberries.

Planting steps:

  1. Dig a hole wide enough for the roots to spread without crowding. Create a small cone of soil in the center of the hole.
  2. Set the crown on the cone with roots spreading downward, at exactly soil level.
  3. Backfill and firm soil around roots. No air pockets.
  4. Water in immediately and keep soil moist for the first 2 weeks.
  5. Space plants 12–18 inches apart in rows 24–36 inches apart.

Removing blossoms in Year 1

For best long-term production, remove all flowers that appear in the first growing season. This disappointing step pays off significantly: plants that cannot fruit in Year 1 build stronger root systems that produce larger crops in Years 2 and 3.

I tested this approach in my Zone 7 raised bed by allowing half a row to fruit in Year 1 and pinching blossoms from the other half. In Year 2, the plants that had been pinched in Year 1 produced 40% more fruit per plant than the ones allowed to fruit early.

Pinch off each flower bud as it appears from planting through July. In August, allow flowers to set and the plants will produce a small fall crop in the first year — this is acceptable. The big payoff comes the following spring.

Soil, beds, and drainage

Strawberries need well-drained, slightly acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) more urgently than most garden fruits. Root rot from Phytophthora and Pythium fungi kills strawberry plantings in poorly drained soils within a season. Raised beds prevent this problem entirely.

If planting in-ground, create raised mounded rows 6–8 inches above the surrounding soil level to improve drainage. Test soil pH with a simple home test kit; add sulfur if pH is above 6.5.

Avoid planting where tomatoes, peppers, or potatoes grew in the previous 3 years. These crops carry Verticillium wilt, which persists in soil and infects strawberries.

Watering and mulching

Strawberries need 1–1.5 inches of water per week during the growing season. Consistent moisture through fruit development is critical — irregular watering during ripening causes dry, seedy berries and poor flavor.

Drip irrigation is strongly preferred over overhead watering. Wet foliage in warm weather promotes Botrytis (gray mold) and other fungal diseases that reduce yields and fruit quality. Drip lines deliver water to roots where it’s needed without wetting foliage.

Straw mulch: Apply 2–3 inches of straw mulch around plants (not over the crown) to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and keep developing berries clean off soil. This is where strawberries get their name — straw was historically used to keep the fruit dry during ripening.

Overwintering: In Zones 3–6, apply 3–4 inches of straw mulch over the entire bed after the ground freezes in fall. Pull it back in spring when growth begins. This protects crowns from freeze-thaw damage without trapping moisture that causes rot.

Fertilizing everbearing strawberries

Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) at planting, then a liquid fertilizer at half-strength every 3–4 weeks through the growing season. Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for leaf and runner development; potassium drives fruit quality.

Avoid heavy nitrogen applications — excess nitrogen produces large, dark green leaves and reduced fruit. Stop fertilizing 4 weeks before the expected first fall frost to let plants harden for winter.

Runner management

Everbearing and day-neutral varieties produce fewer runners than June-bearing types, but still require management. Remove most runners to keep plant energy directed toward fruit production.

Leave 1–2 runners per plant to produce “daughter” plants that replace aging mother plants. Mark the daughter plants you want to keep; remove all others by cutting the runner stem. After 2–3 years, daughter plants are more productive than the aging originals.

Common problems

Botrytis (gray mold): Most common disease in everbearing strawberries, especially during wet summers. Gray fuzzy mold appears on ripe and overripe berries. Prevention: drip irrigation, straw mulch to keep berries off soil, adequate plant spacing for air circulation. Remove affected berries immediately.
