How to identify flowers: four reliable cues
Flower color is the least reliable identification feature because color varies widely within a single species. The four most reliable cues for identifying any garden flower are bloom shape, petal count, leaf arrangement, and plant height—in that order.
Using bloom shape first narrows a field of thousands of species to a few dozen. Common bloom shapes in US gardens:

After bloom shape, count the petals on a single flower. Most species have a fixed petal count: 5 petals (geraniums, impatiens, phlox), 4 petals (coral bells blooms, some mustard family), 3 petals (trillium, iris has modified petal groups), or composite heads with many tiny flowers.
Leaf arrangement is the third cue. Leaves that grow opposite each other on the stem (one on each side at the same point) vs alternating (one at a time, switching sides) narrow identification quickly. Most mint-family flowers (salvia, catmint, bee balm) have opposite leaves.
Zinnias: the easiest annual to identify
Zinnias are one of the most recognizable US garden annuals: upright plants 12–36 inches tall, with rough bright-green oblong leaves and composite flower heads in solids, bi-colors, or striped patterns in nearly every color except blue.
Zinnia leaves clasp the stem (the leaf base wraps around the stem without a separate leaf stalk) and feel slightly rough or scratchy to the touch. This is distinctive—most other common annuals have leaf stalks.
The flower head is a composite: a raised central disk surrounded by flat ray petals. In fully double zinnia varieties, the disk is hidden by densely packed petals. In single varieties, the yellow or orange disk is visible at the center.
Bloom size ranges from 2 inches (in Profusion types) to 5–6 inches (in Giant Dahlia-flowered or Benary’s Giant types). Stem texture is stiff and slightly hairy. Plants grow stiffly upright with little branching until deadheaded—cutting spent flowers triggers lateral branching and doubles bloom count.
Zinnias bloom from 8–10 weeks after direct seeding until the first frost in fall. Marigolds: identifying French vs African types
The two most common marigold types sold in US garden centers differ significantly in size and bloom structure: French marigolds (Tagetes patula) stay compact at 6–12 inches with 2-inch blooms; African marigolds (Tagetes erecta) grow 18–36 inches tall with dense 3–5 inch ball-shaped flowers.
Both types share the same identification markers: feathery, pinnate dark-green leaves with a sharp, distinctive scent when touched; composite flower heads in yellow, orange, gold, or bi-color; and alternating leaves on sturdy, branched stems.
The scent is the fastest identification cue. Crushing a marigold leaf releases a pungent, slightly medicinal odor from volatile oils. No other common US annual smells quite the same.
French marigolds bloom in the classic “daisy with a central button” pattern—a visible center with single or semi-double petals around it. African marigolds produce fully double, globe-shaped flowers where no center is visible.

Coneflowers (Echinacea): the most recognizable US native
Coneflowers are native North American prairie plants that are one of the most widely sold perennials in US garden centers. The raised central cone—bronze-orange, spiky, and persistent even after petals drop—is the single most distinctive identification feature in any composite flower.
Standard coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) grow 24–36 inches tall with coarse, lance-shaped leaves and rough, branching stems. Petals droop downward from the raised cone at about a 30–45 degree angle—an unusual characteristic among daisies. Most composite flowers have horizontal or upward-angling petals.
Bloom color in species coneflowers is pink-purple. Modern cultivars extend the color range to white, yellow, orange, red, and bi-color. The cone remains orange-bronze in all varieties.
Coneflowers bloom June–September across most US zones, then dry to persistent seed heads that goldfinches feed on through winter. Hostas: identifying by leaf pattern
Hostas are shade perennials identified by their textured, heavily veined leaves in solid green, blue-green, yellow-green, or variegated patterns. The flower spike—lavender or white tubular bells on a tall stem—is secondary; most people grow hostas entirely for their foliage.
Hosta leaf identification cues:
- Texture: Deeply grooved veins and a matte, corrugated or puckered surface (especially in blue types like Halcyon or Sieboldiana varieties)
- Color: Blue-green to green to gold-green, often with contrasting margins or centers in variegated types
- Size: Leaf blades range from 3 inches (miniature hostas) to 24 inches (giant types like Sum and Substance)
- Shape: Heart-shaped to oval to lance-shaped, with pointed tips
Hostas emerge in spring as tightly coiled shoots (called “eyes”) and unfurl slowly. The emerging shoots are one of the most reliable spring identification markers for bare garden beds—tightly coiled purple or green shoots with visible ribbing in early April.

Salvia: flower spikes that attract hummingbirds
Salvia is one of the most variable genera in the US garden—it includes both annual and perennial species, with flower spikes in blue-purple, red, pink, or white. The reliable identification cue is the square stem, a feature shared by all mint-family plants (Lamiaceae).
Run your finger along the stem: if it has four flat sides rather than round, the plant is in the mint family. Combined with opposite leaves and a two-lipped flower structure (the corolla has a distinct upper and lower lip), the mint family is confirmed. Within that family, salvia is identified by the two stamens inside each flower tube and leaves that may be strongly aromatic when crushed.
Annual salvias (Salvia splendens, bedding salvias) grow 12–18 inches with bright red, pink, purple, or white spikes and remain in continuous bloom from spring to frost. They prefer full sun and heat.
Perennial salvias (May Night, East Friesland, Caradonna) grow 18–30 inches and bloom most heavily in May–June, with a repeat flush in August–September if cut back after the first bloom. These are more tolerant of dry conditions than annual types.

Peonies: large cup blooms with compound leaves
Peonies are one of the most distinctive spring-blooming perennials in US gardens: large, glossy compound leaves with pointed leaflets, stiff stems, and cup or bomb-shaped flowers up to 6 inches across that appear for 2–3 weeks in May.
Peony foliage is reliable even before bloom. The leaves are dark, glossy, and compound—made of multiple pointed leaflets that arrange outward from the main stem. Stems are stiff and reddish at the base in spring. Plants grow to 24–36 inches in a tidy clump.
Three main bloom forms appear in US garden peonies:
- Single: One ring of petals around a yellow center
- Semi-double: Two or three rings of petals
- Bomb/double: Fully double with inner petals that form a rounded center mound; no visible stamens
Color range: white, pale pink, hot pink, magenta, red, and coral. No blue or yellow peonies exist—these color claims in some marketing are exaggerated.

Black-eyed Susans: the US wildflower backbone
Black-eyed Susans (Rudbeckia hirta) are native throughout the continental US and are among the most recognizable wildflowers in the country: bright yellow daisy flowers with a dark brown to black central dome, on hairy stems 18–36 inches tall.
Identification from a distance: the dark, raised dome at the center is more prominent and dome-shaped than a coneflower’s dome. Petals are yellow, sometimes with a rusty-orange base near the center. The entire plant (stem, leaves, and flower stalks) is noticeably hairy—running your hand up the stem feels rough.
Leaves are lance-shaped to oval, also hairy, with slightly scalloped edges. Leaves near the base of the plant are larger than those up the stem.
Black-eyed Susans naturalize across US roadsides, prairies, and meadows and bloom June–September. They self-seed vigorously in US conditions—one plant becomes a colony within 3–5 years without management. Regular deadheading slows self-seeding if you want to keep the planting controlled.
