Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) grows in all 48 contiguous US states and produces urushiol, an oil that causes allergic contact dermatitis in about 85% of people. Know what you are dealing with before you touch it

Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) produces urushiol oil on every part of the plant — leaves, stems, roots, and berries — all year, including in winter on bare stems. The oil transfers on skin contact and causes allergic dermatitis in approximately 85% of people.

Correct identification prevents accidental exposure during removal. Poison ivy has three leaflets per leaf — the source of the saying “leaves of three, let it be.” The leaflets vary in shape from pointed to rounded, and the middle leaflet has a longer stem than the two side leaflets. Leaf edges may be smooth, toothed, or lobed on the same plant.

Poison ivy grows in three forms depending on site conditions:

  • Low ground cover, 4–8 inches tall, in open sunny areas
  • Climbing vine with aerial roots on trees, fences, and walls (vines can reach 60 feet)
  • Shrubby clumps 2–6 feet tall in forest edges and disturbed areas

Poison oak (Toxicodendron pubescens) grows primarily in the Southeast and West and resembles poison ivy with more oak-like lobed leaflets. It produces the same urushiol oil and requires identical removal treatment.

According to the CDC, poison ivy reactions send over 350,000 Americans to the doctor each year. Reactions range from mild itching to severe blistering that can be temporarily disabling.

Why poison ivy is so hard to kill permanently

Poison ivy has a deep root system with a woody crown that stores energy reserves. A mature plant sprayed once with herbicide may die back to the soil and regenerate from the root within 4–6 weeks.

Several factors make repeated treatment necessary:

Root depth: Established plants have roots 3–5 feet deep and 6–10 feet laterally. A single herbicide application kills foliage but may only partially damage the roots.

Seed bank: Poison ivy berries are eaten by birds and deposited throughout yards. New seedlings emerge continuously, especially in disturbed soil. Killing today’s plants does not prevent new seedlings from next month’s bird droppings.

Seasonal factors: Herbicides work best when poison ivy is actively growing and conducting nutrients from leaves to roots. Dormant plants in winter are far less susceptible. Applications from May through August are most effective.

Persistence: The plant can regenerate from 1-inch root fragments. Any physical removal that leaves root pieces behind will produce new plants.

Chemical herbicides that actually work

Triclopyr (the most effective option)

Triclopyr is the active ingredient in most brush-killer products sold in the US. It is a selective herbicide that kills broadleaf plants (including poison ivy) while leaving lawn grasses unharmed in most formulations.

Products containing triclopyr include Ortho Brush-B-Gon, Spectracide Brush Killer, and Crossbow (a commercial-grade formulation). Both amine and ester forms are available. The amine formulation is safer near water; the ester formulation penetrates waxy leaves more effectively in cool weather.

Application: Spray triclopyr on actively growing foliage in May–August. Coat leaves until they are wet but not dripping. Avoid spraying on windy days to prevent drift. Wear full protective gear during application.

Expect to see leaf wilting within 3–7 days. Most foliage dies within 2 weeks. Roots take longer — plan a second application 2 weeks after the first and a third application 2 weeks after the second. Three full applications kill 90%+ of mature plants in my experience.

Glyphosate (Roundup and generics)

Glyphosate kills poison ivy but is non-selective — it kills any plant it contacts. Use it only where no desirable plants are nearby. It is more effective than triclopyr on some poison ivy populations.

The same multi-application strategy applies. One treatment with glyphosate kills foliage but not all roots in an established plant.

Cut stump method: the fastest and most targeted approach

The cut stump method bypasses the foliage entirely and delivers herbicide directly into the plant’s vascular tissue.

  1. Put on nitrile or rubber gloves, long sleeves, long pants, and eye protection. Have supplies within reach before starting.
  2. Cut all stems to 2 inches above the ground with loppers or a handsaw.
  3. Immediately — within 5 minutes — paint concentrated triclopyr herbicide on the freshly cut surface. Use an old paintbrush or dauber. The wound stays fully open for about 5 minutes; after that the plant begins to seal the cut and absorption drops sharply.
  4. Apply to every cut stem individually.
  5. Check in 3 weeks. If new growth appears from the root, cut and treat again.

From my own testing over a 3-year removal project: the cut stump method killed previously stubborn plants that had survived 6 rounds of foliar spray. One application killed two of three plants completely. The third needed two cut stump treatments.

Organic removal methods

Physical removal

Physical removal works but carries real risk. Every leaf, stem, and root segment must be treated as contaminated. The urushiol remains active in dead plant material for up to 5 years.

What you need: Disposable nitrile gloves (not latex, which urushiol can penetrate), long sleeves and pants that you will immediately wash in hot water, plastic bags for disposal, and a garbage can with a bag for tools.

Process: Grasp the stem near the base and pull slowly to bring up as much root as possible. Work when the soil is moist for easier root extraction. Place all material directly into garbage bags — never pile it up. Seal the bags.

After removal: wash all tools with rubbing alcohol before touching them with bare hands. Wash all clothing immediately in hot water. Shower with soap and water within an hour of exposure.

The limitation: Physical removal leaves root fragments that regrow. Plan for 5–7 removal sessions over 2 years to eliminate an established patch by this method alone.

Boiling water

Pouring boiling water directly on the root crown kills the shallow root zone. This method is slow and requires repeated application but involves no herbicide chemicals.

Pour 2–3 gallons of boiling water directly at the base of each stem to drench the root crown. Repeat weekly for 6–8 weeks. Effective on small plants; less effective on large established clumps where roots are too deep for the heat to reach.

Smothering with cardboard and mulch

For low-growing ground cover poison ivy, smother it by removing above-ground growth and laying cardboard 4 layers thick, overlapping by 12 inches. Cover with 6–8 inches of wood chip mulch. This cuts off light and slows regrowth significantly.

The plant will eventually penetrate the cardboard, so inspect regularly and remove any emerging stems immediately. This works best as a follow-up to herbicide treatment rather than a standalone method.

Controls that do not work

Bleach: Bleach burns foliage on contact but does not reach roots. Regrowth from roots appears within 2–4 weeks. Additionally, bleach damages soil biology and kills desirable plants in the treated zone.

Salt: Salt kills all plants in the area, including desirable ones, and renders soil infertile. It also runs off into drainage where it can harm aquatic ecosystems. Not recommended.

Vinegar (horticultural or household): High-concentration acetic acid burns foliage but does not penetrate roots. The same regrowth problem as bleach applies.

One spray application: No single spray application, even with the best chemical, permanently kills a mature, established poison ivy plant with deep roots. Multiple applications over multiple weeks are always necessary.

Safe handling protocol

Urushiol transfers invisibly on any surface it contacts — garden tools, pet fur, gloves, and clothing. Follow this protocol every time.

Before you start:

  • Wear long sleeves and pants that you will not wear again without washing
  • Wear nitrile gloves (two pairs recommended for physical removal)
  • Wear safety glasses if spraying
  • Have all tools ready so you touch fewer surfaces during the job

During:

  • Never touch your face or eyes
  • If gloves tear, stop and put on new gloves before continuing
  • Keep a garbage bag open and accessible for immediate disposal

After:

  • Remove gloves by turning them inside out without touching the outside surface
  • Place gloves directly in a garbage bag
  • Strip off outer clothing and seal in a separate bag
  • Shower with soap and water, lathering multiple times, within 30 minutes
  • Wash all clothing separately in hot water

Tools: Wipe down all tools with rubbing alcohol. Any tool that touched poison ivy can transfer urushiol to your bare hands during the next use.

Disposal: what not to do

Never burn poison ivy. Urushiol in the smoke causes severe respiratory reactions, eye damage, and internal rash symptoms. This applies to fresh plants, dry plants, and dead roots that have been in the ground for years. The CDC has documented serious injury from burning poison ivy.

Disposal: Seal all removed plant material in heavy plastic garbage bags. Double-bag if possible. Dispose in regular household trash on collection day. Check your local regulations — some municipalities accept yard waste, but many require chemical-free material.

After removal: preventing regrowth

Even successful removal leaves a window for re-infestation from seeds dispersed by birds. Here is how to close that window.

Dense ground cover: After killing poison ivy in a garden area, plant a dense cover crop or perennial ground cover that competes with seedlings. Creeping phlox, pachysandra, or ajuga in shaded areas; catmint, creeping thyme, or sedum in sunny areas.

Monitor the perimeter: Poison ivy seeds fall from neighbor properties and travel 100 feet from a bird’s perch. Walk the affected area monthly from April through October. Pull any seedlings immediately — small plants can be removed without herbicide when caught at 2–4 inches tall.

Edge vegetation control: Where poison ivy grows along fence lines or property edges, maintain a clear zone of 18 inches from the fence and treat any regrowth immediately. Fall is the best time for a final herbicide application because the plant is moving nutrients to roots for winter storage, carrying herbicide deeper.
