Basil: the essential pepper companion

Below ground: Marigold roots produce a compound called alpha-terthienyl, which is toxic to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne species). Nematodes are a serious problem in sandy soils and in gardens that have grown tomatoes or peppers repeatedly in the same spot. A border of French marigolds surrounding the pepper bed at 12–18 inches from plant stems provides meaningful nematode suppression with 2–3 seasons of consistent planting.
Important: use French marigolds (T. patula), the smaller bushy type sold at most US garden centers. African marigolds (T. erecta) do not produce the same root compounds in the same concentration. French marigolds also stay compact — they do not shade peppers the way tall African types can.

Carrots: the companion you don’t see working
Carrots interplanted near peppers loosen compacted soil as they grow, creating channels that improve water drainage and root aeration around pepper plants. They do not compete meaningfully with peppers for nutrients — their feeding zone is different in depth and profile.
Peppers are relatively shallow-rooted (main roots spread in the top 12–18 inches). Carrots grow downward 6–12 inches, occupying a different soil zone. This non-competition is what makes them an effective interplant rather than a competing neighbor.
For sandy or loose soils where drainage is already excellent, carrot companions provide less benefit. In clay or compacted raised beds, they are worth including.
Nasturtiums: trap cropping for aphids
Nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus) attract aphids preferentially over peppers — they are a more attractive host. Plant nasturtiums 18–24 inches from peppers and allow them to become colonized with aphids. The aphid-infested nasturtiums then attract ladybugs, green lacewings, and parasitic wasps, establishing a predator population that spreads to protect the nearby peppers.
This is “trap cropping” — using a more attractive sacrificial plant to pull pests away from the main crop. Do not spray the nasturtiums for aphids. The point is to allow infestation so predators establish.

Tomatoes and peppers: compatible with caveats
Tomatoes and peppers are compatible companions with similar cultural requirements — full sun, warm soil, consistent moisture, and similar fertilizer needs. They can grow in the same raised bed or row without significant competition.
The caveat is disease sharing. Both tomatoes and peppers are susceptible to:
- Bacterial spot (Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria)
- Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)
- Phytophthora blight (in wet conditions)
Planting them together is fine in a single season. Planting them in the same bed year after year is not — the soil builds up pathogen populations that affect both crops. Rotate tomatoes and peppers to a new bed every year.

Avoid or space carefully:
- Fennel: allelopathic root secretions; plant at least 4 feet away
- Brassicas (cabbage, broccoli, kale): different water and fertility needs; brassica-specific pests can spread to nearby peppers
- Apricots and stone fruits: share bacterial spot disease; avoid planting peppers under or near stone fruit trees
- Potatoes: share many of the same diseases; rotate both away from shared areas
Spacing companion plants around peppers
Plant companions 12–18 inches from pepper plant stems. Closer than 12 inches causes root competition. Farther than 24 inches reduces the volatile compound effects from aromatics like basil and oregano.
Peppers themselves are typically spaced 18–24 inches apart. Companions can fill the gaps between pepper plants or form a border ring around the pepper planting area.
In a 4x8-foot raised bed with 6 pepper plants:
- Plant basil in the gaps between every other pair of peppers

Managing companion plants for best results
Companion plants need basic care to stay functional through the season:
Basil: Pinch flowers as they appear to keep plants in vegetative growth. Flowering basil still repels pests, but the plant slows volatile oil production and declines faster. If you want basil seeds, allow one plant to flower; keep the rest pinched.
Marigolds: Deadhead spent flowers every 1–2 weeks to maintain continuous bloom and pest-deterrent volatile production.
Nasturtiums: No management needed for trap cropping. Allow aphid infestation intentionally. Remove entire plants at season end — do not compost aphid-infested material.
Dill and parsley: Allow to flower and go to seed. The umbel flowers are the pest-control element. Let them self-seed freely for next year’s population.
The most effective companion planting systems in US vegetable gardens are maintained throughout the season rather than planted once and ignored. A marigold border that loses its flowers in July and is never deadheaded provides little benefit in August when pest pressure is typically highest.
