Understanding the raspberry plant’s two-year cane cycle
Raspberry plants are perennial, but their canes have a two-year life cycle. Year-one canes (primocanes) grow vegetatively. Year-two canes (floricanes) flower and fruit, then die. New primocanes replace them. Understanding this cycle is the foundation of all raspberry care.
This cane cycle determines when and how to prune, which canes to remove, and why raspberries planted this year won’t produce a full crop until next summer (in summer-bearing varieties).

Summer-bearing (floricane-fruiting): Primocanes grow in year one. The same canes overwinter and bear fruit in early summer of year two, then die. Examples: Latham, Canby, Killarney, Boyne.
Everbearing (primocane-fruiting, also called fall-bearing): Primocanes bear fruit in fall at their tips in year one. The same canes overwinter, and the lower portions of the cane bear fruit in early summer of year two, then the entire cane dies. Examples: Heritage, Caroline, Fall Gold, Autumn Bliss.
Most home gardeners in the northern US find everbearing varieties more practical — the fall crop is the more reliable one in Zone 5–6, and the simpler pruning option (cut everything to the ground each fall) is easier to execute consistently.
Where raspberries grow in the US
Raspberries grow in USDA Zones 3–9. Production varies significantly by zone:
- Zones 3–4 (northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, New England, Dakotas): Excellent production. Cold winters kill many disease problems. Long days in summer fuel vigorous growth. Best varieties: Boyne, Killarney, Nova, Latham (all cold-hardy to Zone 3).
- Zones 5–6 (upper Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest): Strong production. The most common home gardening zone for raspberries in the US. Most standard varieties perform well.

Planting raspberry canes
Bare-root raspberry canes planted in early spring establish better than fall-planted or potted canes. The cool spring conditions allow root growth before summer heat stresses plants.
Site selection
- Sun: Full sun, 6+ hours daily. Morning sun is preferred over afternoon sun in hot climates — it dries dew off leaves faster, reducing fungal disease.
- Drainage: Critical. Raspberries in standing water develop root rot within one season. Avoid low-lying areas. If drainage is poor, plant in raised beds.
- Spacing from other plants: Raspberries spread through suckering. Keep 5+ feet from property edges, gardens, and lawn areas where suckers would be unwanted.
- Air circulation: Plant rows from north to south when possible. This allows sun to reach both sides of the row and improves air movement, reducing fungal disease.
Planting steps
- Prepare the soil to 12 inches depth. Amend with 2–3 inches of compost worked in.

Trellis systems for raspberries
Raspberry canes reach 4–6 feet tall and lean or fall over without support. A simple post-and-wire trellis is the minimum for manageable raspberry production.
Basic T-trellis:
- Drive 5-foot posts into the ground at 10-foot intervals along the row.
- Run two strands of 14-gauge wire at 18 inches and 36 inches from the ground on each side of the posts.
- Guide new canes between the wires as they grow — they’ll be supported on both sides.
This design lets you separate primocanes (current year) from floricanes (fruiting) by training them to different sides of the trellis — a major help when selectively pruning everbearing varieties.
Pruning raspberries by type
Summer-bearing raspberries
- After summer harvest is complete (July–August), cut ALL fruited floricanes to the ground.
- Thin remaining primocanes to 4–6 the strongest per linear foot of row. Remove weak, spindly, or diseased canes.
- Tip the remaining primocanes at 4–5 feet to encourage lateral branching.
- In early spring of the following year, remove any winter-damaged canes.
Everbearing raspberries (two-harvest method)
- In fall, after the fall crop is complete, cut only the top 12–18 inches (the portion that fruited in fall) from each primocane.
- The remaining lower portion of those canes overwinters as a floricane and bears fruit in early summer.
- After the summer crop, cut those floricanes to the ground.
- Thin new primocanes in late summer.
Everbearing raspberries (single fall harvest — simpler)
- In late fall or early spring, cut ALL canes to the ground.
- New primocanes emerge in spring and fruit in fall.
- No fruited canes to track; no selective pruning.
- Downside: you forfeit the summer crop entirely.
Most gardeners with limited time or space prefer the single fall harvest method for its simplicity.
Fertilizing raspberries
Raspberries need a balanced fertilizer applied in early spring as new growth begins.
- Established beds: Apply 10-10-10 at 4–5 lbs per 100 square feet of row in early spring (March–April). Apply again in early June.
- New plantings (year one): Apply half-rate fertilizer 6 weeks after planting. Do not over-fertilize in year one — excessive nitrogen encourages cane growth at the expense of root establishment.
