What borax actually does to ants

Borax (sodium tetraborate) kills ants by disrupting their digestive system. Workers carry bait back to the nest and feed it to larvae and the queen. When the queen dies, the colony collapses. This process takes 1–3 weeks and cannot be shortcut.

The mechanism matters for understanding why borax bait fails when people use it wrong. If you apply borax directly to ant trails, workers avoid the powder and the colony survives. If your concentration is too high, workers die before returning to the nest. The whole point is slow poisoning — borax has to travel through the colony before it kills.

Borax is a boron compound naturally occurring in lake beds and desert evaporates. The US is the world’s largest producer, with major deposits in California’s Mojave Desert. At low concentrations, borax interferes with ant metabolism without immediately killing the worker, giving it time to return to the nest and feed the queen.

Why concentration is everything

The single biggest mistake people make with borax ant bait is using too much borax. At 3–5% concentration, borax kills worker ants before they reach the nest. The standard DIY borax ant bait recipe

This is the formulation I use for odorous house ants, pavement ants, and Argentine ants — the three most common nuisance species in US homes and gardens.

Sugar bait (for sweet-feeding ants):

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon borax (20 Mule Team Borax works fine)

Dissolve sugar and borax fully in warm water. The ratio produces approximately a 1% borax solution. Soak cotton balls in the mixture and place them in a shallow lid or bottle cap near ant trails. Replace every 2–3 days or after rain.

Protein bait (for protein-feeding ants): Some ant species prefer protein over sugar, especially during certain seasons when they are feeding larvae. Test both baits: if ants ignore the sugar bait within 24 hours, switch to a protein version.

  • 1 tablespoon honey

Mix well and place pea-sized amounts on small squares of wax paper near trails. Protein bait spoils faster — replace every day in warm weather.

Fire ants: a southern US priority

Fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are an invasive species established across 14 US states from Texas to Virginia. They are more aggressive than native ant species and their mounds can damage vegetable roots and electrical equipment. They prefer protein bait, not sugar — a point that trips up many gardeners who try standard sugar-borax bait on fire ant mounds and see no results.

For fire ants, use a registered broadcast bait containing spinosad or hydramethylnon, applied according to label directions. The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends the two-step method: broadcast fire ant bait across the yard, then treat individual mounds with a contact insecticide or drench. Borax can work as a supplement but should not be your primary fire ant tool.

Bait station placement for garden use

Placement determines whether the bait reaches the colony or just feeds random foraging workers that never return.

Locate ant trails first. Ants travel fixed routes between food sources and the nest. Spend 10 minutes watching where workers are walking — trails are visible as a steady stream of movement along walls, along the soil surface, or under mulch. Place bait directly on the trail, 6–12 inches from the visible activity.

Do not disturb the trail. Ants that detect danger near a trail will reroute. Place bait gently and walk away. Check after 24 hours — you should see workers clustering around the bait. If not, the bait is in the wrong location or the wrong formulation for this species.

Protect bait from weather. Rain dilutes sugar-borax bait in 30–60 minutes outdoors. Use one of these approaches:

  • Commercial bait stations (TERRO and similar products use this formulation)
  • A small plastic bottle cap covered with an inverted container weighted with a stone
  • A short section of PVC pipe laid on its side with bait cotton balls inside

Near vegetable beds: Place bait stations at the edge of the bed, not inside it. Avoid getting bait solution on plant roots — while the concentrations in bait are low, repeated application to the same soil patch can raise boron levels enough to damage feeder roots.

Safety considerations for pets and children

Borax has an LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of test animals) of about 2,000–6,000 mg/kg in rats — similar to table salt. It is not acutely toxic in the small quantities used in bait, but it should not be eaten deliberately by pets or children.

A dog weighing 20 pounds would need to consume several tablespoons of pure borax to reach a dangerous dose. A cotton ball soaked in 1% borax solution contains roughly 0.015 grams of borax — far below a harmful level. Still, treat it as you would any pesticide: keep it out of reach, use enclosed bait stations when children or pets are present, and wash hands after handling.

The EPA classifies borax as a pesticide ingredient with low acute toxicity and requires it to meet safety standards before commercial use.

Borax is generally safe to use near garden plants when confined to bait stations. Applying it broadcast to soil — as some older guides recommend — is different. Boron is a plant micronutrient, but it becomes toxic above about 1 ppm in soil water. Do not dissolve large amounts of borax in soil to kill ant nests.

Why commercial ant baits work — and when to use them

Commercial borax-based ant baits like TERRO use the same active ingredient as DIY bait but in a pre-mixed, stabilized formulation with food-grade attractants. They cost more per application but require less setup and resist evaporation longer than DIY cotton ball stations.

TERRO’s outdoor liquid bait stations hold up to 3 weeks between refills in dry weather. They are particularly useful along fence lines, deck perimeters, and the foundation of the house where DIY stations would need daily monitoring.

When to choose commercial over DIY:

  • Large infestations covering multiple entry points
  • Ants that ignore homemade sugar bait (species palatability varies)
  • High-traffic areas where bait needs to be replaced frequently

When to stick with DIY:

  • Budget constraints — a $5 box of borax provides dozens of bait applications
  • When you want to customize the concentration
  • Garden applications where you need multiple small stations spread over a wide area

Timing borax treatment with ant biology

Ant colonies are most active in spring and early summer when they are building colonies and raising larvae. This is the best time to use borax bait because workers are foraging aggressively and will find and carry bait more reliably.

In late summer and fall, many colonies shift to protein-heavy diets as they prepare for winter. If summer sugar bait is no longer drawing traffic, switch to protein bait or wait for spring.

During winter, ants in most US zones go semi-dormant. Treatment is less effective from December through February in Zone 6 and colder.

Monitoring progress and knowing when it worked

After placing bait, expect the following timeline:

  • Day 1–3: Ant traffic increases dramatically around bait. Workers are recruiting others to the food source.
  • Day 4–7: Traffic begins to slow. Workers are poisoned and colony activity declines.
  • Day 10–18: Ant trail disappears. Colony is dead or has collapsed.
  • Day 21+: If activity continues, the colony survived (possibly because the queen was not reached) or a new colony moved in from outside.

If a colony survives 3 weeks of continuous baiting, try switching formulations — protein bait instead of sugar, or vice versa. If that also fails, the colony may be very large (Argentine ant supercolonies can span hundreds of feet) or the nest may be unreachable through bait alone.

Odorous house ants re-enter homes through gaps around pipes, windows, and door frames. After eliminating the colony, seal entry points with caulk to prevent re-infestation. No bait approach produces permanent results if entry points remain open.

Common reasons borax ant bait fails

Concentration too high. The most common reason. Reduce to 1% and restart.

Bait in the wrong place. Workers that find bait accidentally do not recruit others. Place bait directly on active trails.

Bait replaced too often. Leave bait in place for at least 3 days before concluding it is not working. Disturbing the station resets recruitment.

Wrong bait type for the species. Fire ants and carpenter ants need protein bait. Test both if unsure.

Rain diluted the bait. Protect bait from weather. Replace immediately after rain.

Multiple colonies. Argentine ants form supercolonies with multiple queens. Treating one trail may eliminate one branch while others continue.

New ants from outside. After colony elimination, new workers from neighboring colonies may find the same food sources. Continue monitoring for 2 weeks after apparent success.
