Why raspberry trellises matter

Raspberry types and how trellising differs

Before building, identify whether your raspberries are summer-bearing or fall-bearing. The two types grow differently and respond to different trellis designs.

Step-by-step installation

1. Mark end post locations. Set end posts at the ends of the planned row. The row should run north-south if possible, so canes on both sides of the trellis receive morning and afternoon sun.

2. Brace end posts. End posts bear the constant outward tension of stretched wire. Brace each end post with a diagonal brace post driven into the ground at a 45-degree angle, or use a stake-and-wire dead-man anchor behind each end post. Without bracing, end posts lean inward over time.

3. Set end posts. Dig holes 2 feet deep and at least 10 inches in diameter. Set post, check plumb, and backfill, tamping soil firmly in 4-inch layers. Allow concrete around the base if the soil is sandy and loose. Let posts cure 48 hours before tensioning wire.

4. Set line posts. Line posts at 5–8 foot intervals bear the vertical weight of canes but carry no horizontal tension. They can be lighter—metal T-posts or 2×4 lumber work well. Drive T-posts with a post driver. Set wooden line posts 18 inches deep.

5. Attach wire at lower level (3.5 feet). Thread high-tensile wire from one end post through line posts at 3.5 feet above ground, to the opposite end post. Attach to end posts with a tensioner and wire loop. Tension the wire until it gives only slight flex when you press the middle—about 50–80 lbs tension.

6. Attach wire at upper level (5 feet). Repeat at 5 feet above ground. This upper wire holds the tops of tall canes and prevents windward lean in summer thunderstorms.

7. Clip or staple wire to line posts. Use wire staples or wire clips to hold each wire to line posts. This prevents wires from sliding up or down over time.

T-bar trellis for fall-bearing raspberries

Fall-bearing raspberries produce primocanes that spread outward from the center of the row as they grow. A standard two-wire system channels all canes to one side, which the T-bar handles better by providing lateral wire on both sides of each crossbar.

T-bar materials

Each T-bar post consists of a vertical post with a horizontal crossbar attached at the top. The crossbar holds two wires—one on each side of the row.

  • Vertical posts: 4×4, 7 feet long (set 2 feet deep = 5 feet above ground)
  • Crossbars: 2×4, 2 feet long, attached at the top of each vertical post
  • Upper wire height: 5 feet (run along the ends of crossbars, one wire per side)
  • Optional lower wire: 3 feet, attached 6 inches inward from each outer wire

The T-bar is more complex to build than a two-wire system but keeps fall-bearing canes better organized and maximizes the two-crop potential of everbearing varieties.

V-trellis design

The V-trellis is a variant of the T-bar where posts lean outward at the base of each row end, creating a V-shape when viewed from the end. Canes train outward and upward along the arms of the V.

This design is favored by commercial growers because it maximizes airflow through the center of the row and allows harvest from both sides simultaneously. For a home garden, it is more complex to build than a standard two-wire system but the airflow benefits are meaningful in humid regions.

Training raspberries to the trellis

Installing the trellis is the easy part. Training canes to the wires requires one session per year.

Summer-bearing raspberries

As primocanes grow in their first year, tie them loosely to the lower wire using soft plant ties or natural twine. Do not use wire or wire twist-ties, which can cut into canes.

After harvest in year two, cut all fruited floricanes at ground level immediately. Select the 5–7 strongest primocanes in each foot of row and tie them to the trellis wires. Remove remaining primocanes to reduce crowding.

The fruited canes (now cut) are visually distinct from primocanes because their bark is darker and more papery. Primocanes have green, smooth bark.

Fall-bearing raspberries

Option 1 (two-crop): Allow floricanes to winter over and produce a June crop; then cut them after this secondary harvest. Meanwhile, tie new primocanes loosely to the wires through summer.

Option 2 (one-crop, simpler maintenance): Cut all canes to 3–4 inches in late February–March before growth begins. New primocanes grow, fruit in August–October, and the cycle repeats. This eliminates the summer crop but simplifies pruning dramatically.

Mulching the raspberry row

A 3–4 inch layer of straw or shredded wood chips along the base of the trellis reduces weed competition, retains moisture, and insulates roots through winter. In Zone 5–6, this mulch layer is important for protecting shallow roots during freeze-thaw cycles.

Keep mulch 3–4 inches away from cane bases to prevent crown rot. Apply mulch in late fall after canes have hardened, or in early spring before growth begins.

Common raspberry trellis problems and fixes

Wire sagging under fruit load: Upgrade to 12.5-gauge high-tensile wire and install inline tensioners at each end. Check tension in early summer before fruit load peaks and adjust as needed.

Posts leaning inward: End post bracing was insufficient. Install a diagonal brace post or dead-man anchor. If the post has already leaned significantly, re-set it before tensioning the wire again.

Canes pulling out of ties: Ties from previous year remain when you remove floricanes and can bind to canes you want to keep. Establish the habit of untying all canes before removing old ones. Use a different color tie for year 1 vs year 2 canes.

Wildlife damage: Deer browse raspberry canes heavily. A 4-foot wire fence around the entire patch is the most effective deterrent. Without it, a new flush of deer-browsed primocanes in June may not reach full height before fall harvest season.
